I have always been impressed how Arizona welcomes those specialists and trailblazers who want to pursue medicine and technological advancements. Nearly the last 3 years my eyes have widened even more as I watch a friend, “Uncle Charles” and his family go through the roller coaster of emotions of him losing his own heart! Yes, I didn’t know that was possible, and still live! I’m sure he would have rather been at his new home watching his kids grow up, playing ball, being a regular dad and husband, but he was literally teathered by a heart pump to “Club Mayo.” What an amazing and caring staff they have!

In May, Uncle Charles became the first recipient of what I affectionately call, “The backpack heart.” After some time, he was free to walk out of Club Mayo and rejoin his family! Today, I learned that after waiting nearly 3 years, he received a heart transplant and a kidney! I am thankful he lives here in a state so advanced, and that some people in Tucson invented this “backpack heart,” so that he bought some time until God found him a perfect match. Also, what a wonderful gift the family who lost their 25 year old gave, so that another could live. May you get stronger each day Uncle Charles, and I look forward to seeing you saving Team Obi’s spot under the tree at the Phoenix Asthma Walk!
